Organic Lawn Care
If you want to reduce the
need for fertilizers and have a healthy, care-free lawn
that's the envy of the neighborhood, read on! There are
several top golf courses that swear by Merrill's Compost for
their demanding needs. And new homeowners are discovering
the benefits of applying Merrill's Poultry Compost to their
lawns.
NEW LAWN.
We recommend starting your lawn with a health soil. Till 1"
of Merrill's Poultry Compost into four inches of top soil.
Then broadcast seed and cover the seed with a 1/8" layer of
Merrill's Poultry Compost. (You can rent a compost spreader
from your local rental store.)
Keep the compost
top-dressing moist, but don't let it puddle. The best time
to plant a lawn is in the Spring or Fall. Beware of planting
a new lawn in the heat of the summer -- you may have a ton
of weeds come up with your grass. If you have to put in your
lawn in the summer, we recommend sod rather than seed.
Prepare the soil in the same way before the sod is laid.
ESTABLISHED LAWN.
Once your lawn is established, we recommend aerating once a
year, and applying compost three times a year at 10 yards to
the acre. You will need NO OTHER FERTILIZATION if you follow
this all-natural program, and you'll have an even, healthy
green lawn free from brown spots and disease.

Fruits and Vegetables
GARDEN PREPARATION.
If you want the best-tasting tomatoes, beautiful
raspberries, incredible potatoes, and fabulous peppers,
simply till in 1" of Merrill's Poultry Compost before you
plant, and put your beds 'to bed' in the fall by tilling in
1-2" and let it work all winter.
You'll thank yourself in
the Spring when you go to your garden and find the soil
softened, and you know that the essential microorganisms and
nutrients found ONLY in Merrill's Poultry Compost have begun
naturally feeding your plants and preparing your soil for
planting. And don't worry if you forget in the Fall -- just
till in an inch before you plant.
WATER WITH COMPOST TEA.
Every other watering, treat your garden to a healthful dose
of Merrill's Compost Tea! Your garden will reward you with
and bountiful harvest of better-tasting fruits and
vegetables, and reduced or eliminated problems with disease
and pests.

Trees
OPERATION 'GOOD START'.
The most critical time for your new tree is at the time of
transplanting from the nursery. It is absolutely crucial
that your trees get a good, healthy start. No smart gardener
would ever place a healthy tree in unhealthy soil and expect
it to do well.
Begin by digging a hole a
least twice the size of the root ball. Mix 1 part Merrill's
Poultry Compost into 3 parts native soil (from the dirt you
remove from the hole). This will add beneficial
microorganisms and microbial fungi directly to the root zone
of your tree. Water well!
OPERATION 'RESCUE'.
If you have a tree in trouble and didn't have the
opportunity to prepare your soil with Merrill's, never fear!
We've experienced great success in rescuing and reviving
dying trees. Here's what to do: Dig a 3-4 foot deep trench
10-15 outside the drip line. Fill the trench with Merrill's
Poultry Compost and water in well. (If there's a problem
with sprinkler lines or utility lines, use a post-hole
digger and dig holes every 3-4 feet, and fill with compost.
It's a good idea to dig the sod out before you start digging
so you can replace it over the compost.)
