What is Compost Tea?
Compost Tea is an organic,
nutritionally rich, highly-concentrated liquid extract made
by steeping aged compost in water. When the tea is made with
well-balanced, aged, premium-quality compost, it is alive
and teaming with healthy microorganisms and nutrients your
soil and plants crave. The tea can be used in place of water
when watering your plants, either as a root drench or
directly on the foliage. The nutrient-rich tea is readily
absorbed into the roots and foliage of your plants for
almost immediate results!

The History of
Compost Tea
Compost tea has been
used for thousands of years. In fact, you can find
references to compost tea in writings dating back to the
Roman Empire (De Agriculura by Cato).
Recent years have seen
a resurgence in the passion for compost tea as gardeners
are turning to organic methods of growing and protecting
their plants. They're ready to give up chemicals and get
back to nature.
Now plant lovers from
all walks of life, from the local garden center to
Martha Stewart, are singing the praises of compost tea.
Compost tea has even been called 'Liquid Gold', and
Susan Davies, a news reporter, put it this way: "A big
bucket of dark brown goo has gardeners going ga ga!"
There's good reason for
this enthusiasm. Compost tea literally transforms your
soil into a rich, healthy, active growing environment,
and the lush results are absolutely undeniable!

BEWARE - not all
compost teas are the same!
The quality and
effectiveness of any compost tea varies greatly depending on
several factors, including the quality of the compost and
the tea-creating process.
A variety of complicated
home recipes and contraptions are available for
the home user. However, there are many problems associated
with creating compost tea using these methods.
What you should know
about home-brewing from home-made compost:
- The quality and
nutritional content of the compost used is unknown.
- The brewing equipment
is often expensive (around $199 and up for a popular
home device)
- A variety of different
'recipes' are available, each with different
ingredients, additives, and aeration steps required.
- The process is very
messy and time consuming (up to a week).
- The instructions are
not precise or easy to follow -- some guess work is
involved.
- Experience and
experimentation are required to create good tea from
your particular compost, and it will probably be
different every time.
- The tea may be full of
'solids' and have to be strained to use a foliar spray.
- If unfinished compost
is used, the tea may contain harmful pathogens, and
compost that is too old may be nutritionally deficient.
